My good friend John Goalby recently sent me a link to a story about an "art toilet" in London.

The thing is sitting out on the sidewalk, and its walls are one-way mirrors, allowing people using the facilities to get a full view of everything going on around them, but allowing outsiders to do little more than check their hairdos in the reflection on the outside.

I, for one, think this is the most awesomest toilet in the whole universe. I wish there were one near my home, because I'd use it in a heartbeat - OCD be damned!

I don't know why, or what's wrong with me, but the idea of peeing while knowing that I can see people who can't see me just seems so cool. It also reminds me a bit of time I spent living in France, where you could pee on the sidewalk in front of everybody, except that they could see you because there weren't any walls. You also had to share the sidewalk with several other people, and things got complicated when there was a lot of pedestrian traffic.

The English solution, methinks, is quite a bit better.

And, as Kori and I discussed, people aren't just going to use this for potty time. It's totally unavoidable that a couple people are going to go in there and engage in some hanky panky.

Now that would be fun.

If any of you, friends and readers, have had any direct experience with this fine toilet, then please make a mention of it in the comments - I'd love to hear about some real world looing with this thing.

What I don't get is how there is any light in there for photos; is the roof made of normal glass? There are even shadows down low, so I think the whole thing really is a ruse on the person using it. The glass turns transparent when you close and lock the door and everyone can see you in there *thinking* they can't see you.

Sweet I'm currently a 10min walk from that toilet. I'll save up for a trip over there tomorrow.

I've thought up the ultimate toilet

one-way glass, and a timer like in san francisco so you have a couple minutes or the glass goes transparent.

I like the timer idea. How about making the transparency based on smell. The smellier you are the more transparent it becomes!

I am surprised that David Blaine hasn't set up house in there for a month.

Leo, one-way glass keeps light from getting *out*, not getting *in*... ;)

Leo/Dave: doh!

Rory: I saw an advert for this thing a while back, it's pretty cool huh?!
And yep, I doubt it'll be too long before there's butt marks on the glass.

I guess it's appropriate that it's located outside of the BM.

Nobody appears to have considered using it at night. Clearly a light inside would render the thing completely tranparent. Either that or you wiz in the dark. Or worse... 8->

i once used a toilet in a mexican restaurant in vienna that had a videoscreen in the ceiling that went on a 30 second loop. It began when you entered, so if after thirty seconds you looked up you saw your entrance replayed, followed 30 seconds later by a video of you looking up at it being replayed etc.

The fun part was if you left the toilet too quickly, then the next person could get a replay of your final 30 seconds unless you closed the door fully to reset the camera.
