Contest Question #3 [Final question]

[UPDATE: Just round the answer to the nearest whole number - sorry about the confusion.]

OK - here's how this works.

Find the answer to this question and then write it down somewhere. In notepad, wordpad, or [whatever]pad.

Do not write your answer in the comments section. That'd just be very un-good.

Later today (Friday), I'm going to post a form in which you'll be able to enter and submit your answers.

[Note: Part of the answer to this question can be found at www.msdnevents.com, and part you're going to have to google for (or already know)]

Question #3

To answer this question, you'll have to do the following:

1. Find the MSDN Event that's taking place on November 18, 2004 in OregonĀ - note its address

2. Find the MSDN Event that's taking place on December 16, 2004 in Washington - note its address

3. Head over to MSN Maps and Directions (it's important that we all use the same mapping software to come up with the same answer, so don't use MapQuest or whatever else!)

4. Map the driving directions between these two locations and make a note of the distance between them

5. Find out how many furlongs per minute you would have to drive in order to make this trip in two hours

6. Convert the value to binary - this is your answer (because it's possible, although unlikely, that some mapping information might change between now and the time you make your entry, I'm going to allow for answers within a certain range - if you're "close enough," then it's good enough)

Write the answer down, and wait for me to put up the entry form...

Now is that the quickest or the shortest?

And did you want that expressed as a binary fraction, a repeating decimal (repeating binary?), or as an IEEE-encoded single or double?

"Now is that the quickest or the shortest?"

Use the default settings (should be Quickest).

Just use some ones and zeros, god damn it!

BTW, Rory, youy didn't mention anything about it but I've been caught to often not to ask the question: Is the contest open to participants outside North America ?

If not, well..., at least I learnt what a furlong is ;-)

Is the competition open until Monday? Or are you closing it eben sooner than that? I remember you were going to run it until next Friday, but that would be after SellsCon. Giving away a ticket for an event that's already happened would be mighty innovative as far as competition prizes go, but innovation isn't everything!

I'm not sure if you've done the question, but the commentor asked this:
"And did you want that expressed as a binary fraction, a repeating decimal (repeating binary?), or as an IEEE-encoded single or double?"

That's important because the answer is not an integer. Or do you want it rounded? A real reply would be appreciated. Thanks.

Same as Noah said about rounding the number.
when will you drop the form? we are all waiting :-)

I'm confused too about the answer. Not an integer, so how do you want us to convert this to binary?

Rory said:

Sorry, everybody -

Just round the number - either direction.

I'm taking anything within a ballpark, so don't sweat it too much.

Hey Rory,
When are you drawing the winner? Do I have to stay up tonight to wait for your form, or can I enter tomorrow?

Heya Rory,

Could you be a wee bit more specific with how you would like that binary formatted pretty please? I had heard some numeric types store the sign (positive or negative) in the first bit?

Would you like us to ignore the sign (given it will be a positive) and start from the right as 1, then 2, then 4, etc. E.g.
25 = 1 1 0 0 1
(16 8 4 2 1)

Cheers,
Insano
