Australia or bust...

Carl and I have been asked to speak at TechEd 2005 in Australia (and possibly New Zealand), and everything was going swimmingly until…

…no money.

Now that I’m a Microsoft employee it’s, ironically, much more difficult to get to various conferences around the planet than it was before.

When Carl and I were asked if we’d consider speaking at TechEd 2005 on the other side of the globe, I was ecstatic. However, things took a bit of a turn for the worse when I learned that there was pretty much no dough to get me there.

That’s all right, I guess. Understandable, anyway.

But I still want to get there, and here’s what I propose.

You: Tech company looking to get some very unique exposure at a large convention for a piddly amount of cash

Me: The guy who will wear a bunny suit during the entire conference (while speaking, too) with your company’s name and logo printed on it. In addition, I’ll hand out pamphlets and push your product like there’s no tomorrow.

Cost: Two round-trip plane tickets to the conference from Portland, OR, USA (one for my girlfriend – you don’t expect me to leave her behind, do you?), and a hotel room. I’ll handle meals and transportation within the city.

If you’re interested, or if you know someone who is, then GET IN CONTACT WITH ME FOR CRYIN’ OUT LOUD.

I mean, I’m practically begging to sell out here.

I’m serious, by the way. I will be your walking billboard in a bunny outfit.

Hire me.

You could pass around a tin can at the Portland Nerd dinner this week. All that extra change from food court purchases might just get you there.

Rory, how about auctioning off something?

There's been the auctioning of blogging services by Jeremy C. Wright (ensight.org), and then there's the auctioning off of sponsorship rights for the G'day World (gdayworld.com) podcast!

So maybe you could auction off some of your famous cartooning skills? (Or even one off/unique cartoon drawings).

Just not sure how much $$$ you'll generate through it.

You might as well do a national tour whilst down here in Australia :)

Hell, I thought it was bad enough that they always hold Tech Ed NZ in Auckland because they're too cheap to pay the airfares to Wellington for the US speakers :-)

I'd pay for you to go just so I could see you in a bunny suit, trying to navigate the conference restrooms!

That is of course, if it weren't for the fact that I'm also a bit poor at the mo.

Maybe you should go for multiple sponsorships - kinda like a race car. you could be the TechEd sticker boy.

Of course, with sponsorship there would inevitably be some minor changes required. You'd have to get used to your new name "Fisher & Paykel Rory Blyth".

What if you set up a Rory Blyth depreciation society? Charge X bucks a time.
You could then steal an idea from lord of the rings special editions i.e. have the last half dozen of your slides packed full of the names of the all the members in a really, really tiny font that’s almost impossible to read....
Each member of the society could have a personalised cartoon on your blog or something to sweeten the deal.

You could even offer some premium services e.g. the option to have words of the member's choice buried somewhere in your slides. They shouldn't be too obtrusive but then one day, far in the future some masochist could be trawling through your slides and stumble across the words "brian smells of piss". This really appeals to my subversive side...

Yes, it is expensive to get here. Now you know how we feel in a PDC year as we living downunder have to pay for the airfares, accomodation and for the PDC.... :-(

You could ask Carl for a raise. Where is all the sponsorship money from the show going? Not for bandwidth...

Worse case, you could always pimp out your girl friend.

The girlfriend already pimps herself out and uses the money to pay for school and art supplies. We need another source.

Mr. Blyth,

We here at the Oracle-Sun-Linux Consortium would be happy to provide backing for your excursion "down under". However, we do have a few modifications:

1) In return for the afore-mentioned compensation you would wear a Penguin suit instead of a riduculous bunny get-up.

2) Your suit must be climate controlled by a thermostat running embedded Java.

3) Your girlfriend must dress as the character "Slammer the Worm" and flog at least 3 Windows-based PCs with an ax each day of the conference.

If you're still interested feel free to drop me a line.

Sincerely

Larry McNealy-Towards

How about I pay for two tickets, one for your girlfriend and one for myself. You can wear the bunny suit and sit at my desk for that week. I am sure nobody here will notice and I am sure the trip with your girlfriend will be quite enjoyable.

Pay for me to go to a conference too (mine is cheaper, I don't require you to pay for my girlfriend [a hooker would be cheaper anyway] though I'm not going to dress up for anyone [well maybe the hooker])
