Pears and Cherries

Regardless of your feelings toward Open Source, if you’re a developer, your little developer heart has to bleed at least a little for the people working on PearPC.

If you haven’t been following the story, here it is in a nutshell…

There’s an Open Source project called PearPC – PowerPC Architecture Emulator. It emulates PowerPC hardware – basically a software G3 that you can run under other operating systems. That’s pretty cool.

There’s another project out there, not Open Source, called CherryOS. It does something very similar to PearPC.

Very, very, very similar.

So similar, in fact, that it looks like bits of PearPC are showing up in CherryOS.

While I think that Open Source developers are a bit naive, I still don’t think the team working on PearPC deserves this mess.

Wow, that's pretty harsh. That drunkenblog article puts things very well though - most OSS developers do it for the love of it, and they simply don't have the financial or legal resources to do much about what the CherryOS people are doing.

I guess that's a problem with OSS licenses - it doesn't matter how "legally sound" the license actually is, if you can't enforce it, it's not much more than a waste of bits.
