Patterns of oppression? I think not...

There has been a lot of talk lately about the White Male Blogger.

Tom Boucher has been thinking out loud about this stuff, and he linked to me in the context of the following paragraph:

I guess it amuses me how people struggle to find patterns of oppression in all things. Battlestar Galactica (the new version) doesn't have enough black people (never mind they got just about everyone else including a hispanic guy in charge of everything and a woman as the president). I mean only a subordinate is black, and then the prisoners were black, but no one important is black. Never mind that it's filmed in Vancouver. Wonder what their population mix is of the 'races'.

While I realize that the point of Tom’s post is not to address the issue of black people on the new Battlestar Galactica show, I’m going to focus on it anyway. I mean, he, like, linked to me and stuff, so I’m going to respond.

I’ve heard the argument before that the demographics of the city (Vancouver, BC) in which BSG is filmed aren’t conducive to having a lot of black people on, but I’d like to point out that there seemed to be plenty of black people available for the prison ship.

Anyway, I certainly wasn’t looking for “patterns of oppression.” To the contrary, I thought I went out of my way in that post to explain that, of all people, I’m one of the last to assume racism first.

However you wrap the argument, it was a stupid mistake. Almost no black people, and then, on board a prison ship, tons.

If they were able to cast them for that show, then I don’t see why they couldn’t cast them for other roles as well. I don’t think demographics were the problem here.

Hi Rory,

If we are talking about the 3rd episode "Bastille Day" I think you should try watching it again, because I honestly cannot see more than one or two black guys among the prison extras [And there are at least 12 of them]

The only black guys on the prison ship who you get a decent look at are:

1) the guard who frees them [who is a bad guy but not actually a prisoner]
2) a guy sitting on one of the top bunks with a beanie on in the first slow pan over the cells
3) a heroic/handsome marine who participates in the rescue.

Some of the group shots are a bit dark/blurry but i'm still pretty sure that the prison pop is less than 1/6 black.

Hey Rory,

Why aren't there any popular African American Bloggers out there? I mean why can't the black community use blogging for money, power, opportunity, and scholarships? I think the man got something to do with this. You working for him at Microsoft so you know what I'm talkin about! Ya' see he leaves it to white males like you to steal all the thunder from an inspiring African American blogger like myself. (Nevermind the fact that black people are too lazy to keep up with a blog unless you can somehow fit chrome rims on it and/or smother it in Chicken grease.) And oh no you didn't say something about female bloggers without addressing the sista's out there tryin to get they Blog on!!! No you didn't go there!

I think you covered the entire patterns of opression thing in your earlier post. Well done. While I initially had a problem understanding where you were coming from in the BattleStar Galactica post it made sense when I read completely thru it. Take it easy kid.
