NewsBreak - Smartphone RSS Reader

I’m excited.

In that nerdy way.

I’ve been looking for a good RSS reader for my Smartphone, but hadn’t found anything until today. I’ve installed and uninstalled about five-hundred bajillion-million zillion apps since I started my search, but everything fell short.

Yesterday, out of pure geek frustration, I started coding the RSS reader for myself that I thought nobody else would produce.

A couple hours into it, I stumbled upon NewsBreak and had to deal with the reality that I could code for the next month straight and not come up with a reader as nice.

I have it installed in the 30 day demo mode right now, and I’m… happy.

I’ve been frustrated recently because I work with a few different machines on a regular basis, and I hate (HATE) having readers that are out of sync with each other, and I also don’t like the idea of an online reader because I like to have all of your stupid blogs with me even when I’m nowhere near a net connection (however, if you don’t mind a browser based solution for your Smartphone, you could follow Steve’s example).

What’s so great about having this stuff on my phone is that I can now take it all with me and catch up on my blog reading while waiting in line, riding in cabs, waiting for someone to post bail, and so on. I’ve missed out on huge chunks of activity in the blog world because I’ve been so dissatisfied with the multi-computer problem.

The one thing I’d change about NewsBreak is its lack of information about comments. Even if it isn’t going to download comments, I’d still like it to report on how many comments a particular post has. However, I’m willing to overlook this given how much bootay this app kicks in other areas.

So, yeah. Check it out: NewsBreak. Also available for PocketPC.

And, no - they aren’t paying me. I wouldn’t stop them if they tried, though. I’ve always wanted to sell out.

So how does this solve the 'out of sync' problem, unless you only ever read your feeds on your phone? Or am I missing something?

I use Bloglines for this very reason!

That's *exactly* how it solves the problem.

I'm done with feed readers on the desktop (at least until there's an easy way to keep feeds in sync).

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd want to read feeds on my phone and nothing else IMA. Too fiddly to bookmark stuff for later browsing on the desktop etc.

Rory,

Ok, I downloaded the trial and installed. Can't figure out how to import an OPML file containing my feeds. Maybe it's a trial edition limitation, but if you have any ideas, let me know.

Been using Bloglines on my Audiovox SMT5600 until now, but would be great to have this smartclient running instead.

PS: RSS Bandit is pretty awesome and allows you to store your feed list in it's current state on an FTP server or UNC path. Not bad for a free app.

Rory,

Just curious how you're liking NewsBreak now if you're still using it. I also have a 5600 and just installed the trial. Its very nice, however, like one commenter mentioned, you're still out of sync with your home base aggregator. Have you tried anything new?
