Web services webcast tomorrow

Hi.

Rory here.

I doubt you expected anyone else to be writing a post on this blog, but sometimes it’s good to be explicit.

Anyhoo, I’m going to be giving a webcast tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM PST (that’s noon for all of you east coast types).

It’s going to be about the “Web Services Playground” – in other words, the world of web services that exists beyond ASMX.

I’m going to chit-chat a little about the world of ASMX and what lies beyond. There will be at least one demo, but I’m hoping for two, although I might be limited by time.

At the very least, I’m going to show you people how to sign up for and use Amazon Web Services.

Time permitting, we’ll move on to do something similar with Google. Both are good examples of what to expect Out There – having to sign up, grab an SDK (or just the wsdl), find some demos, and start coding.

Here’s a link to the webcast: Click here to register, yo.

I, like, totally hope to see you there.

Sounds like a cool 'cast, Rory.

Questions: What the heck is a shrinkster.com?.. and why do we have to go there first to get redirected to the registration page?

Shrinkster.com is a URL shortening tool, kind of like tinyurl, except that it's written in .NET.

It takes a big, long, scary URL and turns it into something you wouldn't mind giving to your grandmother.

Or blog readers.

The URL to the webcast was just too freaky long, so I used Shrinkster.com to create a shorter replacement.

The Shrinkster.com URL (the short thing that's generated for you) will forward users to the original target.

It's easy to use - just go to the home page, drop a URL in the box, and go.

Give it a try :)

Cool idea, mainly for printed content. I might see using it in printed resource pages I give to TechNet Briefing attendees, perhaps. But in the electronic form, you're hiding the details of the link beneath blue, underscored hypter-linked text anyway.. so why bother?

Just my opinion. :)

Sounds good! Thanks for letting us know.

I just have one question that's been weighing on my mind, does it require IIS?

9AM? WTF?! I gotta get up early? Man that's not why I got into programming. ;)

On a serious note: Why is it that Microsoft doesn't have any publish web service API's, like the Google API, that you can use for these demos?

Or do they and I'm just not aware of them?

Yeah Rory, when the hell are you going to publish the MSDN api's so we can get all that nice documentation inside angle brackets.

You could of course publish the WhatIsOurBossWorthToday.wsdl that I just know someone must have written..

You got out of co-hosting .NET Rocks! because you "didn't have the time, waah waah". Then you go and start your own podcast. Carl wasn't paying you enough? :P

Do girls know about shrinkage?

I'm guessing it's his way of doing a subtle plug for the boys over at shrinkster, always cool to see there are options like this out there, even if I can’t find a use for it myself.

I’ve never had the problem of changing url’s into more friendly text, but I have a friend who can't seem to do it when sending emails through Lotus Notes so I linked him over.
I’ve never used Lotus, so I have no idea what he is doing wrong, I told him things to check for but still no luck, on the bright side he sent me about 25 emails with the word test that failed to link.

Not related to this post but...

Just Seen CodeRoom2 (The Revenge). Much better than the pilot and an enjoyable watch.

Well done Rory, and your right, it was a shame they didn't throw things around.

Hey Rory! tried to watch the webcast on two different computers but it must not be Microsoft's day cause no luck. Have to catch the on-demand replay. Really weird cause I've never had a problem before today but netmeeting was more like no-meeting...

Good job Rory.

Very well done (you even talked a little slower :) )

Was my last question/concern valid? Or am I misunderstanding web services slightly....

"you even talked a little slower"

I deliberately avoided drinking caffeine this morning. Looks like it helped.

"Was my last question/concern valid?"

Totally. You're at the mercy of the API devs, although anybody who isn't a total bastard will bend over backwards not to break compatability for you.

If I'm not mistaken, did you intend to privately answer the last question in your webcast. Because it was there for everyone to see and it went something like "No, webservices are set in stone. You're the one who's changing grasshopper !"

BTW, a great presentation and enjoyed it a lot. Gave you all 9's ! :)

Yeah - it was a response to George (look above in the comments section - he's in here).

Whoops :)

"BTW, a great presentation and enjoyed it a lot"

Well, thanks very much. I appreciate it...

This is good news. It’s lamentable that we didn’t make this decision in time to actually get the anti-discrimination bill passed, but I’m sure the issue will come up again. And next time, Microsoft has committed to supporting it.
