Another new song...

It’s a little after midnight, and I smell like someone’s been blowing cigarette smoke all over me, but that’s just because someone’s been blowing cigarette smoke all over me.

My pants are kind of sweaty and musty.

This is how I usually feel after spending a few hours with my friend Felix down at his studio.

I haven’t been doing a lot of blogging over the past couple days. It’s in part due to having spent about six hours yesterday evening and night perfecting an outline for a short story I want to write, but more so because I’ve been working with Felix to get another one of these songs of ours pounded out.

We did this one over two sessions. What we have now is a rough mix of how the song should be. This is by no means done, but it’s good enough to put up on the web:

WMA Version – This is the WMA version – It’s smaller than the MP3 version and also of higher quality, but it might not work in your MP3 player

MP3 Version – This is the MP3 version – I don’t think I have to explain what that means

As usual, hope you people like it. I highly recommend that you listen to it using headphones. It’s not mixed yet for home stereo equipment, and you could have some issues with the bass. I’ve also found that Windows Media Player’s “Techno” EQ setting works well for this song.

Felix and I did everything but the flute at the end. That was our buddy Matt who seems to be able to pick up any instrument and play it, simultaneously impressing and frustrating us.

And thanks to Peter for emailing me the other day to demand more music. It was a motivating factor in getting off my tuckus to get this sucker recorded.

I thought the song was great except for thing... the flute; a little too Jethro Tull. This is just my opinion and isn't worth much as I am not a fan of Jethro Tull or the instrument, no matter how it is played. The addition was probably perfect for those that appreciate Jethro Tull and/or flutes though.

You are truly a man of many talents! Thank you for posting the song!

This starts with some shades of Radiohead, the types of chord changes you're using at around 0:40s, and the style of singing (I like the singing at the beginning best). Then it goes a bit Indian at 1:17s. Then it goes all U2 at 1:45.
It's a good effort, but it doesn't beat the musical purity of the original Chris Sells Burning Man song (hotel version). You know, you can play with all these computers and synths, but I'm not sure that the unique sound of an upturned hotel bin can be rivalled.

Musical Critic Blah blah blah...

Whatever Rory, I dug the tune but I didn't intend on critiquing it... just listening. So for what it's worth from a normal dude that likes music, listening to said music you created with said other fellows, I dug it and would like to hear more.

But again, whatever...

Cool! Can you add the Jethro Tull Flute to the Hotel Room Bin version of Burning man. That would be a mix I'd pay for!

Rory,

Is it possible to download your other songs ? I heard the burning man song, and particularly like , is it 'Airbourne Ranger' ? but I have only ever heard bits of them being talked over on DNR.

Both you and Carl are musically talented, and you both state that programming is kind of being creative ! Is it possible to coax being musically creative out of someone who isn't sure they have it ? I'm sometimes quite creative when coding, but wouldn't know how to go about starting to write a song. How do *you* do it ?

Ps, I watched the Code Room 2 the other day. That Jesse is quite attractive, I wouldn't mind getting in the code room with her. But who's that short-arsed geek with her ????

Excellent work on this song Rory, Felix and Matt, This may be my favourite one yet (besides the original Burning Man of course).

Rory, any chance you'll update your music page (http://www.neopoleon.com/blog/music.aspx) with your other songs? Also, how about a link to it from your blog so that we can more easily find it?
