Are my posts too long to read?

[HEY – MAJORLY SUPER IMPORTANT ADDENDUM – READ THIS OR DIE: The idea here isn’t to replace my writing with audio, but simply to do an audio version in addition to Neopoleon.com. I love writing way too much to just do an audio thing. So don’t get your knickers all sour by thinking that I’m ditching Neopoleon.com – I’m not. As a matter of fact, Neopoleon.com, or something very much like it, with writing that is much better, is on its way, so those of you who rejoice in the writing bit should just be that much happier. The point is, Rory Blyth is going multiMEdia, and if that pun didn’t make you vomit, then you’ve got taste, babe. Point being, the long writing will stay, and it will appear in podcast form. There will also be “special” content just for the podcast that won’t appear here because, just like some things in writing don’t translate to audio, some things in audio don’t translate to writing. So, yeah. That’s all. Go back to whatever you were doing.]

I got a comment from a long-time reader (GuyIncognito, for those of you who have the good taste to take part in the comments section), and it went like this:

i have trouble reading the posts with a lot of words in them, but judging from everyone else's responses, it seems like a good one.

This is something that some of my other partially-illiterate, impatient readers have mentioned, and it makes me wonder…

Let’s just say that I know this guy, who we will call “Carl Franklin,” who wants me to start a podcast, and he’s offered to do most of the work so that I wouldn’t have to get off my diva ass to do anything, and it would be me reading my longer posts (sometimes slightly modified for better delivery over the air), and that each episode would last about ten minutes.

Would that be the kind of thing you’d like to have for your tube-ride/bus/car/walk/prison time? I have a sweet voice, like that of a siren calling, from an island afar, diverting you from your course, and leaving you wanting like a parched desert wanderer who has just spent the past three hours chasing an oasis.

It’s sad because I know that my longer posts are the least read, and they are, by far, the best. Some people, specifically myself, would even call them “genius.” I hate to think that the world is missing out on the wonderful experience that is a Rory tale given at length and with many unnecessary tangential and sometimes offensive details.

So… what do you think? Would you listen?

Or would you just ignore it?

I mean, we’re going to do it anyway, but I’m trying to get some support here – a few “goferits” to help me get going. I’ve already recorded a few, but I have to re-record them because Carl was like all, “Those sucked.”

But the new ones would be better.

Because…

They would be.

We learn from our mistakes. Usually. I mean, my eye isn’t going to grow back from “that one time,” but you know what I mean.

phew. ok, well with that out of the way. i'll answer your question.

i read your posts much faster then you will ever read them to me. so i prefer to just keep the long posts in text format (and i do enjoy the long posts). though i'm sure you're right that's not true of some people. (both lack of enjoyment and being able to read them faster)

now sitting down with you sometime and having a face to face conversation or just enjoying the sunny, rainy weather over a silent cup of coffee. that i would be interested in, but having you read posts to me? just not my thing.

Hmmm, interesting point. Please continue...

Have you ever had one of those time where you're sitting at your desk and you know you have a huge booger up in there, and you do a quick exhale, and you KNEW it flew out, and you can't find it?

Damn it! and I'm wearing black, too.

As the guy who introduced you to NYC - http://neopoleon.com/blog/posts/6141.aspx - , I've tried keeping up with your blog since you left the East Coast. Many a time I thought it would be great if you had a podcast because I am a slow reader and your posts are a slight bit longer than the ones I normally see in my aggregator. Long story short ... goferit!

I mean, seriously. I hate driving so much, ten minutes of your podcast is just what I need to crack me up and get me to work. I usually don't have time to listen to stuff like Mondays, but ten compressed minutes of you would be perfect.

And, man, you are seriously losing it these days (in a good way, that is). You are borderline scary ;)

I got as far as "are my posts too" until my ADD started to kick in. I struggled one word further but finding it was "long", it seemed like a harbinger of things to come so I stopped reading.

However i will do what I normally do when I ignore someone: nod vigerously and hope I'm not agreeing to something horrible.

reading has always been my thing, the longer the better. people who may be a li'l literately-challenged may have some problems with reading long posts, either they easily get bored with intellectual senseful material or their mustard-sized brains can't just handle too much insightful info. that is their problem not yours Rory, so I'd say go for what will make you feel good and if that's doing the podcast, then what the hell are you waiting for?! WTF! you shld. be the last person who should care about what people might think short or long posts, unless you're only doing all of these just for the audience?! ;)

Damn right I'd listen - but it's funny that you've gotten feedback from people saying they tend to skip over the longer posts. I have a minimum requirement you see, as I need to utilize MAXIMUM time here at the circulation desk avec Monsieur Blyth. Not that I don't read the breif ones, they too are entertaining, but the long ones...

...boy!

Actually, now that I think about it, maybe then I wouldn't listen. If they were read aloud for me I might not be spending as much time... or getting as engaged. Oh, shit. Tough call. Yes I'd listen, but I'd still supplement with reading them online.

Fuck, I could have been more concise with this. Oh well, if you're anything like me this length of comment means you'll actually read it. And if you're reading this, you've read it. Fantastic.

FIN.

Keep writing the longer posts, I prefer them
I don't dig the podcast thing, doesn't fit my life
But one thing is for sure, everyone is going to prefer something different.

If you ask me, and I realize you didn't, you like to write, and so you should. If someone enjoys your writing they are going to want to read more, not less.

Maybe those people who are complaining like to read books with pretty pictures of dogs and trees to help break up those big words.

if you did the podcast thing...chances are I'd never "goferit". I love reading. And reading your posts relaxes me and, dare I say, inspires me. I told you that I not only read but I write as well and for you to just sit down and plop something so brilliant out is wonderful. Plus, you probably do have a voice like an angel but having someone read me the posts just isn't quite the same. I've tried reading some of your stuff to people and it just doesn't have the same effect. Nevertheless, if you really feel the need to do the podcast thing and if it helps you to accomplish what you want to then I say goferit.

But my vote goes for staying with the status quo.

Part of your skill is writing it so by leaving the reader to interpret the text in their own manner; were you to record them all it would remove that and you'd manipulate our response. Also what would we do without the cartoons?

Overall I find it a nuisance at times to get an email (Squeet) with your latest post, but overall I like it and I can always make time to read it - an enjoy reading them. I always give them my full attention, I wouldn't if it was audio.

Keep up the good old writing and keep the long ones coming :).

Go for the podcasts because people are lazy bastards. As the IT guy at work I ask my users all the time, "Didn't you read my email?" A common response is, "Too many words." You're long posts are pure genius and you're short posts feel like your gyping me out of my free laughs you cheap unthoughtful bastard. So for the lazy illiterates, do a podcast. For those of us who know how and enjoy to read, keep it in written form also. Keep up the good work and I hope sanity as you know it soon returns.

Not all blog posts (Rory's included) are good candidates for Blogcasting. However, there are certain times when a long-form (entertaining prose) blog post _WOULD_ make for good audio content, sort of like the NPR format. So, imagine a world where bloggers read their posts (think audio books), and then those blogcasts can be published and syndicated. You could leave your iPod plugged into your computer overnight, and when you wake up the next morning, there will be a bunch of new blogcasts in the author's voice already loaded for your listening enjoyment.

I wouldn't listen. Not because I don't love you, just because audio is too slow for me.

Btw, I realised what a numb face is all about. When I stay up for a really long time I get a numb face occasionally (say it's happened about 3 times in 18 months). It took me a while to catch on, but it's not actually numbness. It's hypersensitivity. I can actually feel thousands of tiny pins sticking out of my face. It's facial hair. I remember you had a problem where your face went unexplainably numb once. That might have been it. It feels like complete numbness at first. But if you don't panic and concentrate on it then you realise what it actually is. It's like you can feel the hairs growing out of your face. I imagine cats would know what this is all about. Does that make us like cats? Because I think that makes us like cats.

OK. Bye.

(Yes, I was compelled to comment because I got the guilts about the fact that I don't comment here much of late. You made my guilty. See? ...and no, I'm not sending money. Or guns. Or lawyers.)
