More of the Smartest Man in the World

Carl and Geoff did it again.

When I recorded the dry runs of The Smartest Man in the World, I was honestly worried. I thought I sounded like crap and that the shows were going to be crap. They were well recorded thanks to Carl’s skills in the studio, but I thought I sucked.

But, and I’ll be honest here, I love it. It’s my own show, and I’m actually coming out and saying that I love it. I figure it’s all right since I’m not exactly known for my humility.

While listening to the most recent episode (#2), for example, I actually laughed out loud several times. I was like all, “That guy’s funny. Ha ha.”

Then I thought, “He should be famous.”

Then I thought about putting out a press release and calling Time to offer them an exclusive interview.

But maybe I should wait for the third episode or something. Don’t want to get ahead of myself here.

Seriously, though, Carl and Geoff took these dry readings and turned them into something so different from the original, dry product, that I was able to listen to them as though I didn’t write the stuff. It’s neat. Kind of like if I got to read my own blog and I weren’t me. That way I could enjoy it as much as the rest of you.

So check out episode two: The Reptoids Are Coming. It’s teh neatness.

Humility never got nobody nothin' no-how Rory.  You should be sending straight to Rupbert Murdoch suggesting he get his hundred million dollar offer in NOW before the price goes up.  You just need to find a way to talk yourself up more.  "The Smartest Man in the World" isn't doing it for me.  "The being who is so awesome he makes the gods of all pantheons quiver with embarrassment" could work.

Hi Rory,

I'm enjoying your new format - kinda missed your appearance on DNR. Great show, I especially liked the background music that heaps flattery on your voice. Do you know the name of the band and where I can get the tracks.

Thanks,

Alex

Thank you :) Like I said in the post, I'm really happy how it turned out. The goodness is really in the editing/music. The dry recordings were duuuuuuuuuuull.

Which brings us to:

"I especially liked the background music that heaps flattery on your voice. Do you know the name of the band and where I can get the tracks."

I know that Carl and his brother did the music for espisode one - I think that's true for this one as well. It really wouldn't surprise me - Carl can crank out music like nobody's business.

Too many Tech people take themselves to seriously and then there are all those miserable guys you encounter on slashdot and channel9 that live life through a browser complaning about everything.

To be able to make people laugh is a great gift, even if you have to throw a few banana peals around.

very nicely done Mr. Blyth...I enjoyed this one and so did Jimmy.

Looking forward to hearing some others.

Also, it's good to be able to hear your voice whenever I want.  :)

'Toy Boy' and 'New London Blues' kick some serious ass, not too mention the opening tune to Mondays' 'People dumbah than me'.

you didn't sound like you enjoyed it.. so i didn't either.

it sounded rehearsed and dull with that announcers voice you had going on.

and the complimentary background music just rubs me the wrong way.

i think it's great that you guys are working so hard to make the show good. but, it's a comedy show, right? isn't applying complimentary background music taking it too seriously?

if you're going to have background music i think you should have fun with it. screw accommodating other people and trying to make it more enjoyable for them to listen to. it's YOUR show. play music that you enjoy, or music that you don't enjoy but play anyways to annoy other people. whatever. but it's your show - have fun with it.

That was the first (and only) take. It wasn't rehearsed at all.

I actually had fun with that one and am very happy with the results.

"isn't applying complimentary background music taking it too seriously?"

Uh... no.

"if you're going to have background music i think you should have fun with it. screw accommodating other people and trying to make it more enjoyable for them to listen to. it's YOUR show. play music that you enjoy, or music that you don't enjoy but play anyways to annoy other people. whatever. but it's your show - have fun with it."

That's exactly what we did.

I can understand if you don't like the show, but your reasons puzzle me.

I knew that, but then again, I listen to Mondays......

"I wrote songs #1 and #2"
You write stuff too? Awesome.

Actually I thought Carl did all that and you worked the knobs and sliders for him. I had a very short amateur venture into sound/record engineering. Very, very short and very, very, very amateur (unless you think a cassettedeck with 2 mics plugged in constitutes a adequate 2 channel recording device and a teenage bedroom with a drumkit and 2 guitars can pass for a recording studio - if you then feel 4 guys crammed into that can conquer the world, yes, in that case it was very professional - well, it was a lot of fun)
There are actually lyrics I have the copyrights registered to, but I prefer to forget about it :D

I sense you two are trying to out-cool each other with the avatars. Come on, Rory, don't let him get away with that.

No, if I was trying to out-cool rory, I'd obviously be using this:

Are you suggesting that Geoff's avatar is even remotely as cool as mine?

Dude.

1. Mine has a girl in it.

2. His is airbrushed.

No competition.

Ow, man, that's sub zero kelvin cool, you out-cooled Zaphod Beeblebrox there.

And of course it's hand-rolled, they're much cheaper that way. In the Netherlands we get that in kindergarten economy class:
- hand-rolled: cheap
- pre-rolled: bit steep for the average teenager allowance
- golden tip: way out there, man (you should hear 4 year olds saying 'way out there, man' - it's a riot)

Point 1., yeah, that's tough to beat. But Geoff has that thoughtfull, mysterious look the girls die for, so you sort of know that that picture was taken by a girl in a screaming crowd just before she fainted.
On the other hand, in yours you just know the universe is about to explode but you have a 'Not My Problem'-shield with 'I'm Way Too Cool For That Universe Explodes Or Implodes Stuff Oh Well Who Cares Which Way It Goes'-deflectors.
The jury is still out on this.

btw I'm completely corrupt and I can by bribed (for discount prices and no sales tax for Florida residents), so money will definitely influence my final judgement on this matter.

(note to self:
- both think they have a chance, so that's double bribes
- I'm smart AND handsome, I need to clone myself or remain peerless for the rest of my magnificent existence)
