Video: Geek Cribs - Scott Hanselman, Chris Sells, and Rory Blyth

I tore into Microsoft the other day for the style of thinking that gave birth to the installer app for Windows Live products. I was going to follow it up with a post on some of the good stuff you see coming out of the company.

I sat down tonight to get started writing that happy post, but some things changed while I was writing.

Not only is there good stuff at Microsoft right now - there's amazing stuff. And I don't use that italicized adjective lightly. If I knew of a way to get that word to reach out of your screen and slap you across the face for maximum effect, I'd do it. But I don't know how. If you do, then email me. We can be friends.

What's so amazing is a video that was just posted to Channel 10. Specifically, it's a video that I shot and "produced." I don't know what it means to "produce" a video, but Larry Larsen - the bawss at 10 - thanked me in the post for having produced it. I'm way awesomer than I thought, apparently.

The video is an amateurish takeoff on the MTV "Cribs" show where high-rolling music industry douches show you the $8,000 rims they got for their gilted Cadillac Escalades. There's also usually a segment where everybody's drinking Cristal out of ESPN mugs.

In this thing, I follow Scott and Chris around Scott's house, looking at all the blinky fire hazards Scott paid to have installed.

Although the subject of this video is Scott's house and his technology, it's clear that I'm actually the star. Chris and Scott are merely my foils. The "Geek Cribs" theme is only window dressing over what is obviously my show.

I'd like to thank Chris and Scott for helping me out with this one. I owe you guys. Well, I would owe you, but being able to put down on your resumes that you played a minor role in a video I produced is payment enough. You can write your own ticket from here on out. You're welcome.

The thing I was originally going to write about here is a different video that went up on 10 a couple days ago. It was written by Tina Wood and starred just about all my old workmates. I was jealous while watching it because I couldn't have done a better job. It bothers me to see things like that. I'm a control freak and unabashed egotist. That someone could so thoroughly rock my writing skills is unpleasant. The displeasure, however, is balanced out by getting to watch a good video. If it's better than what I can do, then it's phenomenal. It also puts me in my place. As you can see, I've become quite humble. I'm proud of myself for that.

I loved watching my old coworkers. Making a video like that is a pain in the ass. People get grumpy, they have to do a dozen takes for everything, someone has to transfer all the footage to a computer and then edit it... it takes a lot of effort and time. It doesn't come across when you're watching it, though. I just saw Adam, Duncan, Sampy, Erik, and a bunch of other people I miss all having a good time.

I think the Nerf dart-gun sequence was supposed to be part of the joke, but because Sampy has an arsenal of Nerf weapons in his office, the hallways of Channel 9/10 were actually very much like what's shown in the video. I even made a Channel 9 video of Sampy getting shot in the face with a Nerf weapon.

Anyway, Tina's video is good stuff. Probably my favorite 9/10 video ever. I'm biased by enjoying watching my friends in it, but I think I'd dig it even if I didn't know them.

Yeah.

So...

Tah.

Really glad you liked the video.  And yes, it's a bit stressful doing the same thing 10 times to try to get it right, but it was a lot of fun to make.  We all wouldn't mind doing something like it again.  It was fun to get paid to screw around.  :)

I was about to ask if you put together that video until I saw this post.  That was a great video.  Cool stuff shown and lots LOLerpopz!!!1  :P  Great job!  :)

Hmmm..I got as far as the point where Scott used the term 'Wife Acceptance Factor', and then I kind of turned off, as I usually do when I hear someone use that term.

Tim, go back and watch the rest so you don't miss Rory's classic comic genius with the subtitles later on.   Who knew Scott had OCD? ;p

You come across as an asshole. I work with a lot of smart people who could be assholes if they so desired, yet none of them are assholes like you.

Fun video, even for a not-quite-a-geek person such as myself, plus your hand-held camera operating skills are awesome.

Graham: adopting the persona of a cocky bastard is not quite the same thing as actually being a cocky bastard.  I cite Stephen Colbert, Hard Gay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOF89pSZHPg), and Richard Feynman as examples.

I'm with Astrid on the 'cocky bastard'. We all know that Rory really has a melty chocolate interior under a hard, but candy-coated shell.

That video made me realize that for me to truly understand the Xbox I must first get rich, a wife (possibly kids), a house, and use it for things other than games.

Or become a kid of one of those people. My little brother is growing up in a different time than I and he loves his Xbox live.

But he still gets excited when I come over and make his puter run the games that pushed the genres he loves. He loves all types of games. For survival horror we played  Clocktower and Phantasmagoria... he needs his history lessons if he's going to be a well rounded geek in the future.

He may kick ass at the Halo games, but he needs to know Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Duke Nukem, and System Shock too.

I am just concerned with his education is all. :) Yeah, we have fun too.

I'm also concerned that these Xbox's maybe are not being used to play any games. I think of all the starving children in the world without Xbox (or other vids) and it makes me sad.

Subtitles.. very funny.

"You come across as an asshole."

That makes sense - I *am* an asshole.

"I work with a lot of smart people who could be assholes if they so desired, yet none of them are assholes like you."

Somebody's being a little judgmental.

Also, I'm way more popular than you are. I have awesome hair. I wear designer shoes.

I'm the asshole you want to hate because you've worked so hard to get to where you are by doing the "right" thing. I assume it also bothers you that I own my assholeness. I am so down with being an asshole.

'Course, most people know better than to believe what I'm dishing out here. You said that you "work with a lot of smart people." Given that you "work with them" and don't describe yourself as being one of them, I'll help you out a little: smart people have an easier time understanding when someone's going over the top for humorous effect and when someone's simply being, as you say, an asshole.

I don't know if you drink regularly, but there's research going into alcohol-induced damage to the prefrontal cortex as a causal factor in the inability to connect the dots when it comes to humor.

I wish you all the best with your disability.

Thanks for visiting Neopoleon.

To all the Nice People -

Thanks for your comments :)

It was fun getting to help make another video for Microsoft. Given everything I was going through (and putting myself through) while I was there, making videos wasn't much fun when it was my 9-5 job.

Doing it on my own time - and for free - makes it entirely about the fun of it. About a dozen people helped me to get to where I did in the industry, and Chris and Scott were a couple of the first. They inspired me and coached me on how to do this stuff. Without Scott heckling me from the audience, I would have had a hard time developing the tools you need to deflect the assholes you meet in this business. Without Chris coaching me on public speaking, I would have had a much harder time making it as an MSDN Events presenter.

Aside from enjoying gushing about my friends, I also wanted to make it clear - given some confusion in the comments - that, rather than seeing myself as the crucial piece to the fun of this video, I recognize that it was Scott and Chris.

I'm surprised this didn't come across to some, but I guess sarcasm and hyperbole don't work for everyone.

But, yeah... thank you :)

"... plus your hand-held camera operating skills are awesome."

*That* makes me feel good. I had forgotten my tripod that day. I do my handheld stuff with the tripod (without the "pods" (or whatever they're called) extended) because the extra weight helps keep my hand steady.

It's especially tough because of the Parkinsonian-like tremors caused by lithium. I did a bit of shaking here and there, but I think the image-stabilization thing saved my buttocks.

Consumer cameras are getting so light that trying to do anything handheld without ballast is nuts. Back when $9,000,000 VHS camcorders were what the consumer purchased, the so-heavy-you-have-to-wear-it-on-your-shoulder-just-like-a-real-camera thing helped to keep things nice 'n steady.

Still, the portability, methinks, is worth the tradeoff in ease. I have a light, crappy tripod anyway, so moving it around isn't a big deal...

To get back to your comment, though, anytime you - little Miss Cinematiosgramonopher - compliment me on some aspect of the video stuff I do is a good, good, very welcome feeling...

Loved the comments at the end, especially the 'don't buy xbox games'!

Of course, Scott's network is nice (and his cabinet is way cleaner than mine) but I still prefer my AVAtrix solution to shifting a/v around the house. I have the same remote control and its very handy. Not waterproof though. I have a $400 lump of plastic that looks like a harmony remote but no longer functions as one if you're interested. Salad dressing, according to the wife is what killed it..

Anyway, loved the video - nice to see you doing fun stuff again.

I went back and watched the rest.  I enjoyed Rory and Chris making fun of Scott.  And the subtitles.  I also loved it when Chris said "Mono would be good enough for me!" I thought Scott would either faint or challenge him to a duel.

Plus we all know Rory is a sucky loser asshole who gets his ass kicked by little girls like Gigi Edgley, so we don't need humourless people coming in here and telling us what we already know.

The talk of camera shake etc reminded me of this:

which some of you camera geeks might be interested in.  No guarantees express or implied.

That was awesome.  I have GOT to get me one of those remotes.
I did catch the Rory-humor in the subtitles, but missed the part where you were being an asshole.

New places for Cowboy now has to spend the children's inheritance:
* Zune
* Windows Media Server
* Dryer Vent for the back of the media cabinet
* 64-bit PC designed by Jeff Atwood
* The UBER-remote
